Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver is proud to
introduce Pamela and her 3 children. Pam has worked for many years
in administrative support at the Denver Department of Human
Services. She enjoys her job and, because she is bi-lingual,
she especially likes helping Spanish clients negotiate
paperwork and procedures.
Pam and her children
currently live with her parents. Pam decided a few years ago
that she didn't want to rely on subsidized housing. "I gave
up the housing so that someone else in need could have it,
and made the decision to move to my parents so that I could
save money to buy a place of our own," says Pam. However, as
hard as she saved, there was nothing in today's market that
she could afford. Pam said she had heard of Habitat, and one
day just happened to see the name when she opened the phone
and she decided to call. She went to the orientation that
very night. When she heard they were accepted for a home,
she was so excited she jumped up and down on the bed like a
kid. "I have wanted this for so long. I've already been
doing my hours and am learning a lot. I can't wait to start
building on my own home too," says Pam.
With 10
people currently living under one roof, the girls are really
looking forward to their new home where they will have more
space and privacy. One of the children said, "We have moved a lot - it
will be wonderful to know we will have the same home
forever." The oldest has graduated from high school and is
planning on attending cosmetology school; however she's
waiting until the fall so she can first help her mom build
their house. Her sister will help on Saturdays as well, when she
doesn't have a softball game. Their little brother
will have his own room instead of sharing one with his mom.
Pam looks forward to gardening more than anything. "I love
gardening and can't wait to plant vegetables. I love to cook
as well and am looking forward to cooking for everyone."
The sponsors of the home are 2
coalitions of faith groups: Habitat on the Hill and Denver
Alliance for Interfaith Action. "I thank God above and
everyone else for helping. We are so happy and so excited
about this opportunity!" exclaims Pam.
